Responsibilities

Summary:

The Dock Worker Crane Operator supports dock, vessel, yard, and facilities operations at Trident Seafoods' Old Yard facility in Ballard, Washington. This position operates mobile cranes, forklifts, skiffs, and other material handling equipment to safely load, unload, transport, and stage equipment, cargo, supplies, and materials. The role performs vessel support, facility maintenance, environmental compliance, and waterfront operational activities to ensure safe and efficient yard, dock, and marine operations.

 

Essential Functions: (Responsibilities, Tasks, Supervisory Needs)

  • Operates mobile cranes to safely lift, position, load, unload, and transport cargo, equipment, materials, vessel components, and other waterfront assets.
  • Conducts pre-operational and post-operational inspections of cranes, rigging, forklifts, and other material handling equipment; promptly reports maintenance and safety concerns.
  • Performs lifting and hoisting activities using approved rigging practices and established hand signal and radio communication procedures.
  • Loads and unloads vessels, trucks, trailers, containers, and storage areas using cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
  • Secures and releases vessels from moorings and assists with vessel arrivals, departures, shore power connections, and gangway placement.
  • Deploys, retrieves, inspects, and maintains oil boom systems and assists with spill prevention and environmental compliance activities.
  • Operates skiffs and performs waterfront inspections, cargo support activities, and other vessel-related duties as assigned.
  • Assists with facility and dock maintenance activities, including housekeeping, grounds maintenance, painting, debris removal, and minor repairs to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Inspects docks, floating docks, camel logs, crane rails, tracks, and other waterfront infrastructure for damage, hazards, and maintenance needs and reports deficiencies.
  • Maintains inspection records, equipment logs, cargo documentation, and other operational records while complying with company safety, environmental, and operational requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience operating Material Handling Equipment (MHE), heavy equipment, powered industrial trucks, or similar equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain forklift certification within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a basic boating safety course within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain Mobile Crane Operator certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain Current NCCCO Crane Operator certification within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Education & Experiences:

  • Current Mobile Crane Operator certification.
  • Current NCCCO Crane Operator certification applicable to assigned equipment.
  • Experience supporting shipyards, marine terminals, seafood processing, waterfront, industrial, or maritime operations.
  • Experience with rigging, hoisting, or material handling operations.
  • Experience performing general facilities or industrial maintenance activities.
  • Experience operating multiple types of material handling and heavy equipment.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of crane operations, rigging practices, material handling procedures, and safe lifting techniques.
  • Knowledge of waterfront, maritime, industrial, or shipyard operating environments.
  • Knowledge of equipment inspections, preventative maintenance practices, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Skill in operating mobile cranes, forklifts, skiffs, and other material handling equipment.
  • Skill in communicating effectively using radios, hand signals, written instructions, and operational documentation.
  • Ability to safely work around vessels, cranes, suspended loads, heavy equipment, and waterfront facilities.
  • Ability to identify hazards, evaluate changing work conditions, and exercise sound judgment during lifting and material handling operations.
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in varying weather and waterfront conditions.
  • Ability to prioritize work, adapt to changing operational needs, and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, inspection reports, and operational documentation.

 Work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. 

 

Work Ability Requirements:

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank and/or a vertical ladder. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock or a boat unassisted.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
