Summary:

The Welder II performs skilled welding, fabrication, fitting, repair, and metalworking activities in support of shore-side facilities, shipyards, vessels, warehouses, processing facilities, and related operations. This position independently performs welding and fabrication work using a variety of welding methods and equipment, interprets technical drawings and specifications, and supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of company assets.

Essential Functions: (Responsibilities, Tasks, Supervisory Needs)

• Performs SMAW (Stick), GMAW/MIG, GTAW/TIG, FCAW (Dual Shield), and other welding processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other materials as required, including welding in the 3G, 4G, and 6G positions.
• Fabricates, repairs, modifies, and installs structural and non-structural components, equipment, machinery, and vessel systems. 
• Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, drawings, work orders, and technical specifications to complete work accurately and efficiently. 
• Fits, aligns, measures, cuts, and prepares materials for welding and fabrication activities. 
• Operates welding, cutting, grinding, rigging, and material-handling equipment safely and effectively. 
• Troubleshoots welding and fabrication issues and communicates recommendations to supervisors and team members. 
• Provides day-to-day work direction on assigned tasks and supports the development of less experienced welders when needed. 
• Maintains welding equipment, tools, work areas, and materials in a clean, organized, and serviceable condition. 
• Supports continuous improvement initiatives and responds effectively to changing priorities, schedules, and operational needs.

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)

• High school diploma, GED, vocational trade certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum three (3) years of welding and fabrication experience utilizing SMAW (stick) and dual-shield welding processes.

 Preferred Education & Experiences:

• Associate degree in Welding Technology, Marine Trades, Industrial Maintenance, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field. 
• Experience supporting marine, shipyard, industrial, manufacturing, seafood processing, or maintenance environments. 
• Experience with advanced fitting, structural fabrication, pipe welding, and equipment repair. 
• Experience mentoring, training, or providing day-to-day guidance to less experienced welders. 
• Additional AWS, ABS, or other industry-recognized welding certifications. 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of welding processes, fabrication methods, blueprint interpretation, rigging practices, and applicable safety standards. 
• Skilled in SMAW, MIG, TIG, dual-shield welding, fitting, measuring, material preparation, equipment operation, and troubleshooting. 
• Ability to produce quality welds to specification, prioritize work, adapt to changing operational demands, and communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and supervisors. 

Work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. 

Work Ability Requirements:

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank and/or a vertical ladder. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock or a boat unassisted.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
